Step Up Your Fall Foliage Game

Growing up in the northeast, the turn of the season meant vibrant leaves, pumpkin patches, and apple cider doughnuts. It's a trick that mother nature plays to ease us into winter. Before the trees shed their leaves and the gray skies of winter arrive, we are afforded a spectular show.

Leaf peeping is a sport in the northeast. There's daily forecasts. Long, calculated drives to soak up nature's show. But it's time to step it up. You're no foliage amateur. While the car may be easy, here's how to take a day and leaf peep like the champion you are.

1. Lace Up Your Sneakers

Stretch your legs and find a race to see the leaves up close and personal. Fall is the perfect season to run. Training in the summer builds your endurance for an easier run with the cooler fall temperatures. The miles will fly by as the leaves fall around you.

Bonus: you will certainly earn that post-run caramel apple.

2. Set Sail

The leaf peeping road trip is so last year. Discover Boating highlights the top U.S. waterways for viewing fall foliage. No boat? No problem. Take advantage of rental and charter opportunities, from nature cruises to your very own customized boat ride. Nothing beats a day on the water, layered up, spending quality time with friends and family.

3. All Aboard!

Amtrak provides spectacular views for passengers between Albany and Montreal each fall with their Great Dome Car. The vintage Dome car, built in 1955, is the last of its kind in Amtrak's fleet. The car features an upper level with unparalleled 360-degree panoramic views of autumn scenery. Seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis from late September to early November annually.

4. Roll Out

Buckle your helmet and hit the road on two wheels. With bicycle tours popping up all over, you're ready to roll. Tours allow you the freedom to go from quaint New England town to quaint New England town, while having the structure and support of the tour company. Up for a self-guided tour? I've got you covered.
